| And right around the corner, Christmas! Then New Year's! I can't stand the pressure! AAAAEEEEEEEEEEE! So I'll take it in doses. What's everyone doing for Thanksgiving? Anyone got any plans? Anyone daring to try making Thanksgiving dinner? C'mon, spill! I plan on going down to Venice to visit my family for a week (so you guys wwon't be seeing me around between the 18th and the 24th). I also plan on being on a double dose of Prozac the entire time. | |

| Luckily my family's small and we're not far from each other. Every year we take turns hosting holiday dinner. This year it's my turn and the plan is for a big turkey dinner Never made one before so I'm a bit nervous. If you see lots of smoke over Ohio, it's me | |

| Thanksgiving isn't a holiday here in the UK. The closest thing we have is Harvest Festival and that's the Sunday closest to the Harvest Moon, usually around the Autumn Equinox and is one of the oldest celebrations in Britain (going back to pre-Christian times). It has much the same ideas behind it though. It's a time where we give our thanks for food and the years' harvest. Even though it's not a nationally recognized holiday with a specific day, you can find celebrations everywhere in the UK in the forms of festivals and gatherings, modern Pagans celebrate in many communities with bonfires and most popularly at Stonehenge and Churches hold special services where local produce is brought in by the community and then given to the eldery and needy. That being said about the UK's equivelant, with so many Americans living in the UK and the closeness we feel for our American cousins, Thanksgiving in the UK is gaining momentum. A lot of restaurants around the country serve a Thanksgiving dinner in the afternoon or supper in the evening and there are a number of festivals that take place on Thanksgiving Day. Considering it's in the middle of the week, I'll be working but I might stop in at one of the local restaurant for a traditional American supper. | |

| Cool, WW. Let us know what you think about a "real Thanksgiving dinner"!
On the topic of turkeys, anyone know the difference between basting and baking? Isn't basting basically baking and pouring pan juices over it every so often?

Will do, luv, and sorry, not a bloody clue. I actually cook quite a lot, but if it doesn't bleat I have no idea how to cook it. That sounds like a good idea, Alaryah. I have a friend in the States who's family makes it a tradition to order pizza for Thanksgiving dinner every year, so no one has to cook. If all else fails, might have to consider it

| Well, Phyrexia, if there was smoke it didn't make it across the Pond Hope all my mates State-side had a nice holiday. Twas the night after Thanksgiving I just couldn't sleep, I tried counting backwards, I tried counting sheep. The leftovers beckoned - the dark meat and white, but I fought the temptations with all of my might. Tossing and turning with anticipation, the thought of a snack was infatuation. So, I raced to the kitchen, flung open the door, and gazed at the fridge, full of goodies galore. I gobbled up turkey and buttered potatoes, pickles and carrots, beans and tomatoes. I felt myself swelling so plump and so round, "til all of a sudden, I rose off the ground. I crashed through the ceiling, floating into the sky, with a mouthful of pudding and handful of pie. But, I managed to yell as I soared past the trees... Happy eating to all - pass the cranberries, please. May your stuffing be tasty, may your turkey be plump, may your 'tater 'n gravy have narry a lump. May your yams be delicious, may your pies take the prize, may your holiday dinner stay off of your thighs HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!! (I'd love to give credit for this, but I'm not sure who wrote it) | |

| Guess what everybody! No fire and dinner even turned out edible! Even got a few compliments! I am SO glad Christmas dinner is going to be at my brother's. Then my sister-in-law can have all the fun! Ha! I love the poem, Wraith! So you've never had turkey before? And how did everyone else's Thanksgiving go? Everyone survive being with their families? | |

| LOL - What a great poem, Wraith! It sounds like you had a pretty good time Phyrexia and no fire! Always a good thing! Mixer and I survived an entire week in the company of my madcap family. I even got to meet my brand new niece! She was born two days before Thanksgiving, so that was something to be doubly thankful for | |

| I'm glad to hear your home didn't burn down, Phyrexia, and that dinner with your family turned out well. Though I can't blame you for wanting to pass on the "joys" of cooking for the holidays. Baking is one thing, cooking supper is another! No, luv, never had turkey before in my life! But that's not a British thing (we actually have our own species brought over from Spain a few hundred years ago). But apparently it was never the rage in the Smithe Family Household. However, I could easily become a convert. It's delicious! Dot! You're back! Congratulations on the newest addition to your family. I take it then that the big day went well How did Mixer handle all the madness? | |

| Aw, thanks Wraith! *hugs* Yep, all went good! Mixer handled it with his usual social attitude, hung around everybody except me! But I think that's because everyone was giving him turkey samplings... | |

| I've given up and got a three foot tree that discourages climbing, but not chomping or bulb-knocking. | |

| It's down! By my hand, no less!
But I think that's because Mixer got a catnip teddybear from Santa. He's been ignoring the tree ever since! - LOL
