Pegasus - The Divine Winged Steed Empty
PostSubject: Pegasus - The Divine Winged Steed   Pegasus - The Divine Winged Steed EmptyFri Sep 28, 2012 11:21 am

Let's get some things ironed out about the famed flying horse.

First, he's a stallion - not a mare as some people try to argue.

He's almost always depicted as white.

In most, and the earliest, stories, he and his brother, Chrysaor, were sired by Poseidon and birthed by the Gorgon, Medeusa - they were born from her blood either as Perseus cut off her head or when droplets of her blood fell into the sea.

His brother is not a horse. Chrysaor is always depicted as a young man.

Okay, have I left anything out?

Now that that's been cleared up, let's talk about other winged horses. Considering the facts above, should they, in any good conscience, be referred to as pegasi?

Only you could go on for a page setting facts straight about a horse.

Out of curiosity, are there any other winged horses in Greek mythos? I know there were Hippoi Athanatioi but were any of them specifically portrayed as winged steeds and, if so, why are they not referred to as pegasi?

See what you've started? And I don't even like horses all that much, winged or otherwise.

That is an excellent question. I have no idea. I know sometimes the four immortal horses of the sun-god Helios are depicted as having wings but as a general rule, I believe only Pegasus is specifically described as having wings.

And I thought you owned a horse.

I do. But I don't consider them my favorite animal. I prefer the company of my cat.

At any rate, wasn't there a story somewhere that there was a herd of pegusi belonging to Zeus with Pegasus as the stallion? The herd was killed off by some villain and Pegasus was the only survivor?

Having a cat myself, I understand.

I think the "myth" that you refer to was a creation in the original Clash of the Titans movie, where it was Calibos who slew the herd (and was turned into a hideous monster by Zeus as a result). At least I'm pretty sure, anyway.
